What is the best way to merge fixtures and shows from one release to another?

Just a simple two steps:
1. Make old installation folder backup!
2. Uninstall the old one and move all that is left to the new installation.

If major library update not needed for you - then you can use your old installation with a core from new distributive (file lc.exe).

i always install the newer version in the old directory without deleting the older one.
is that not ok?

Everything is correct if you are not changing default library items (fixture DMX profiles, furniture 3D models, textures). If so - copy them from a backup.
The library items that are used in your database you can find in files fixture.txt and furniture.txt located inside "Database_..." folder.
